The Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers was founded in 1959, shortly after the first
diving clubs were organized in Ohio. Today, it is one of the oldest scuba diving councils
in the USA, older than some certification agencies. Ohio Council's mission is to
provide a unified voice for Ohio's divers in legislative matters.
The Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers maintaines close cooperation with Diveheart Foundation, which was founded in 2001 and is a non-profit tax exempt national organization chartered in the state of Illinois. The purpose of Diveheart is to provide and support educational scuba diving and snorkeling experience programs that are open to any physically impaired child or adult.
Together with the third organization, the Underwater Images, which is an international non-profit corporation registered in the State of
Ohio, they held the Underwater Images Photo and Video Competition 2008 with all proceeds from this competition going to marine conservation, educational, and scholarship purposes. The Underwater Images has been in business for more than a decade, and is
managed by a board of directors. Three board members compose the staff of Underwater Images.
The 2009 Underwater Photo and Video Competition by the Underwater Images announced new Contest entry period open until April 1, 2009.
Diving opportunities in Ohio
Many of Ohio's inland lakes and rivers can be dived, including the Ohio River, but visibility is normally not very good. Check regulations before attempting to dive any waters controlled by state agencies such as the State Parks managed by Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Some require permits and have restricted areas, others are off limits for diving and swimming altogether. The Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers is always searching for new nice sites that could be offered to the community for scuba diving purposes or for snorkeling. One of interesting locations for scuba diving is the Natural Springs Resort, which is one of the many wonderful attractions in southwest Ohio and eastern Indiana. Located here: 500 S. Washington St.
