Scubapro Diving Regulators Recalled for Drowning Hazard
In June 2006 the manufacturer of scuba diving equipment Scubapro whose global headquarters is located in El Cajon, Calif., announced the recall of the set of its diving regulators. Scubapro X650 diving regulators were recalled for drowning hazard and the consumers were asked to stop using the recalled product immediately. About 670 X650 Second Stage Regulators were recalled. The possible hazard was desribed as following: "A manufacturing error could cause the main housing of some regulators to change shape over time, which could cause the cover and diaphragm to become dislodged. If this occurs, air flow will be interrupted and the regulators will no longer function, posing a drowning hazard to users." No real incidents or injuries were reported to have taken place, though. The said Scubapro regulators had been sold through Authorized Scubapro dealers in the U.S. from June 2005 through May 2006. All registered buyers of the regulators were offered an option of the regulator free replacement, for which purpose the company undertook to contact the registered owners of the product directly. The picture of the recalled X650 second stage regulator was posted on the CPSC website for visual identification of the affected units that had a characteristic visible raised bump on the side of the regulator close to the mouthpiece.
