The author, Bill Goodwin, was an award-winning newspaper reporter who in 1977 sailed a 41-foot yacht from Annapolis, Maryland, to Tahiti and explored French Polynesia, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. In 1986 he wrote the first edition of Frommer's South Pacific, which has now seen its 11th edition.
