Underwater Gurus Say:
- The main purpose of a dive computer is to replace decompression tables, using its on-board timer and pressure gauge to automatically calculate the same information, but with much greater accuracy.
- Sharks on Sanibel Island. In the period between 1882 and 2007, there were a documented 5 unprovoked shark attacks in the WHOLE of Lee County (the county where Sanibel Island is located). And regarding attacks leading to mortal wounds, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, 4,406 people drowned in America during 1998.If you are the panicking type, here are some suggestions for making your Gulf visits as safe as possible.
- The debate between the suitability of long and shorty wetsuits will continue and it merely comes down to personal preference, as well as the regions that you predominantly dive, surf or practice water sports in. The reasons for wearing the long or shorty wetsuits in the first place are practically the same anyway, with the main factor being that of insulation provided by the wetsuit.
- Near-Sightedness Problems. Are Sight Limitations Causing You to Miss Out on Underwater Beauty? Many of us suffer from nearsightedness (trouble seeing things at a distance) or farsightedness (trouble seeing things up close). In everyday life people deal with these problems by wearing some kind of corrective lenses like glasses or contacts. Seeing underwater is a different story. Seeing underwater is a different story.
- Wreck Diving on a Sunken Chinese Ship in Canada. Ships that are prepared and then purposely sunk for the benefit of scuba divers are called artificial reefs. They are made as environmentally safe as possible. Studies have shown that these reefs can in time foster the growth of organisms equal to their own mass. Many coastal communities have greatly benefited by the growth in tourism contributed to by these artificial reefs. Special training and equipment is usually necessary for the scuba divers who visit artificial reefs. But the thrill of seeing a ship wreck laying on the bottom is worth the extra time and expense.
- Top 5 Dangerous Dives
1. Dive location: The Sea of Cortez, Eastern Pacific Ocean Dangerous rating: **** (4/5) Dangerous animal: Humboldt squid Dangerous factor: The Sea of Cortez is teeming with Humboldt squid; they can grow up to 2 meters long and are ferocious marine predators which have been known to attack humans.
My most dangerous dive to date was whilst trying to capture a shot of The Sea of Cortez's most voracious deep sea predator, the fearsome Humboldt squid. As I looked up through the all enveloping darkness to the silhouette of the shark cage above and the other 2 divers it held safely inside, I couldn't help but think to myself 'Why the hell am I hovering 15m above a 1000m deep pitch black Sea of Cortez at midnight....on my own?!"
- Scuba Diving History and Evolution of Diving Equipment.
Going into the sea and exploring what is beneath has interested people for many years to discover artifacts, repair ships and to look at marine life. The early divers faced the challenges of having to hold their breath while diving into the water which ultimately pushed people to invent and improve on diving equipment to stay underwater for longer and at increasing depths.
- Cook Island Diving at Rarotonga.
The Cook Islands are named after the first European to land there in the 18th century, Captain Cook. They are now an independent state with a small population and are fiercely protective of their rich cultural heritage. As far as diving goes, Cook island diving is ideal for beginners and although not very challenging for seasoned divers, still offers beautiful marine life, warm waters all year and lush rainforests and streams on the island for above-the-sea adventures.
- Diving in the Canary Islands at Gran Canaria.
Scuba Diving in the Canary Islands is the southernmost diving available in Europe and is just a stone's throw from North African waters. Canary Island diving is no better experienced than on Gran Canaria, the third largest island of the chain. Owing to its biological diversity, UNESCO approved Gran Canaria as a World Biosphere Reserve in 2004. The island offers one of the world's best climates and year-round diving for marine enthusiasts. Another plus for tourist is that the shelf around the island is an ideal depth for recreational diving (20 - 24 metres).
- Wreck Diving Safety. Safety is the biggest concern for all scuba divers but even more so for wreck divers. There is a risk of becoming trapped or lost in a wreck. Special training is available to scuba divers where they learn how to use special equipment. Reels of line are used to lay down a safe path through the maze of a ship wreck. Extra tanks of air are slung from the diver. Powerful underwater lights are required to light up the darkness. Wreck divers learn how to plan their dives so that they use one third of their air to reach the wreck, one third of their air to enjoy the wreck and return to the surface and hold the last third in reserve in case of emergency. Wreck divers have to especially cautious of hazards such as sharp and jagged metal.
- Dive Ambergris Caye. Choosing Right Place to Stay and Dive. When I first arrived on Ambergris Caye as a backpacker more than 13 years ago, San Pedro was a very small quaint village with Sandy Streets, I can still remember the first vision that is clearly embedded in my mind to this day. At that time there were only about 6 dive shops spread out along San Pedros multiple docks, each one offering services to the few adventuresome divers that had already discovered this beautiful island also known as la Isla Bonita. Today 13+ years later, many things have changed on Ambergris Caye, the island has quickly developed into a small island mecca and today there are over 40 dive shops...
