Scuba diving courses for children

You may be surprised, but according to scuba diving instructors, working with scuba gear is actually easier than snorkeling. That's why scuba diving can be taught to children.

Canada

In British Columbia's Sunshine Valley vice-president of the Sunshine Valley Ratepayers' Association Mr. Ryan Ellan initiated the idea of teaching scuba diving to children as part of recreational activities plan for the community residents, which has been realized in partnership with Langley Diving, owned and operated by Mr. Les Newman, who has been a friend and fellow scuba diver of Ryan Ellan for ten years. Ryan Ellan is himself a PADI certified rescue scuba diver. Now Saturday-morning course is being offered in the Dan Sharrers Pool for Sunshine Valley residents. Out of the total 22 attendees the majority are kids, while 21 persons are also complete novices. Now Ellan and Newman consider offering a more advanced scuba diving course for kids, which would be a Junior Seals program. Anyone would be welcome to participate, not just the residents of Sunshine Valley.

British Virgin Islands

Another group of children received their first ever scuba diving instruction and lesson from the Kids And The Sea (KATS) and the BVI Scuba Organization (BVISO). The children who participated were given an overview and told about the basics of scuba diving comprised of a brief lecture on the equipment, physics and physiology involved in diving, and then took a shallow open water dive in the bay during a training session to learn the basic underwater skills one should possess before actually starting practical scuba diving. This course has become available at subsidized prices to children thanks to the contributions and support from many years long sponsors like BVI News, Peter Island Divers, Sail Caribbean Divers, Dive Tortola, Blue Water Divers, Scuba Shots BVI and Dive BVI.

Australia

Some scuba diving lessons for children are available in Australia as part of the MontroseAccess Shark Bait Kids' program. This 10-week scuba diving course was started back in 2008 by MontroseAccess physiotherapist Sue Nicklin for children suffering from muscular dystrophy. So far it has a budget of $10,000 formed from the contributions from community, businesses, and induvidual contributors, and there are plans to have it expanded.
