Scuba diving in Belize, Blue Hole and other popular dive sitesScuba diving in Belize is possible all year round, but the best months for diving are April, May and June. The rainy season lasting June, July, August, October and ending in November doesn't affect scuba diving conditions such as underwater visibility at dive sites too much, especially considering that occurring showers end quickly. March, October and November in Belize are often windy. The most famous dive site in Belize is Great Blue Hole, and in fact it is a renowned dive site. It is located near Caye Caulker in Belize. Ring coral reef surrounds a large hole, which is approximately 90 meters in diameter and is extremely deep. Blue Hole in Belize offers some fantastic diving for experienced recreational scuba divers with advanced PADI certification. After the dive to the depth of 25 m the hole opens up inside. The marine life inside the Blue Hole is represented by bull sharks, mako sharks, and lemon sharks. As for the underwater landscape, this the place to dive to watch fabulous stalactites, stalagmites, caverns, rock formations and take some pictures or shoot video of them. The standard procedure scuba diver usually follows while scuba diving in Blue Hole Belize is to first descend to the depth of 14 m and find yourself actually at the edge of the hole itself. Then scuba diver sinks right into the hole, which has a total depth of 148 m. The water temperature at the surface of the dive site is 75 oF and 68 oF at the depth of 33 m. This dive site, also called the Great Blue Hole, was made famous by Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world.
Is scuba diving in Blue Hole, Belize, dangerous? Probably not, if you have the sufficient PADI qualifications. Nevertheless, accidents, including those resulting in fatalities, do occur. For example, in December 2008 a group of scuba divers discovered a human body lying on the seabed, which was later identified as the body of a missing scuba diver who had dived and disappeared in Blue Hole still in 2001. Those were the remains of an American doctor from Miami lying at a depth of 355 feet. The body had no head and portions of the scuba diver's leg and arm were eaten up by sharks.
